University of Rochester School of Nursing Overview

For nearly a century, the University of Rochester School of Nursing has been a pioneering force in the science and practice of nursing. Among our founders and faculty are giants of nursing education and research. The school is well known for developing the Unification Model of nursing, blending research and education with clinical practice. It now offers more than two dozen undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate degree programs, including one of the oldest and most renowned nurse practitioner programs in the country. The School of Nursing is invested in the region, delivering high-quality clinical services that address critical health needs. It houses the Center for Employee Wellness, which offers evidence-based wellness programs to more than 35 employers, and the Passport Health clinic, which offers services for preventing travel-related illnesses. The School of Nursing also provides free and comprehensive primary and behavioral health care services to students at two clinics located at inner-city public high schools. Advancing research and scientific discovery is a core mission of the UR School of Nursing. Its research primarily focuses on four areas of excellence: symptom science, systems of care, innovations in health technology, and promoting healthy behaviors. The school ranks 26th among nursing schools in research funding from the National Institutes of Health. The UR School of Nursing ranks among the nation’s best in delivering graduate education within an environment of diversity and inclusion. The school was one of only eight nursing schools in the country to receive the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award in 2017, and consistently ranks in the top 40 of the U.S. News & World Report rankings for both master’s and doctor of nursing practice programs. In 2019, the pediatric and family nurse practitioner programs ranked 12th and 17th respectively in the U.S. News nursing specialty rankings.
