Overview

CSI is the state government regulator of the insurance and securities industries and advocate for the citizens of Montana. The Office of the Montana State Auditor, Commissioner of Securities and Insurance (CSI) is a criminal justice agency that protects Montana’s consumers by ensuring fairness, transparency and access for Montanans in two of Montana’s largest industries — securities and insurance. While the agency is named the Office of the State Auditor in the Montana Constitution, it's more precisely known as the Commissioner of Securities and Insurance. Despite the constitutional name, CSI is not the branch of Montana government that conducts audits. What CSI does do is perform one of the most important consumer protection roles in the state. We license and regulate insurance companies and producers and everyone involved in transacting securities. As a criminal justice agency, we investigate and handle administrative, civil, and criminal violations of Montana law. In severe cases of fraud and exploitation, we prosecute cases that result in extensive fines and even prison time. CSI also delves into cutting edge tech issues, including how big data, AI, blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and other new tools are rapidly changing and disrupting the financial industries. CSI is a small (~70 employees), family-friendly state agency located in beautiful Helena, Montana, within walking distance of downtown. We offer excellent benefits with flexible work schedules to help assist with your work/life balance. With countless outdoor opportunities, great schools and a small town atmosphere, Helena is an excellent place to live. We are an equal opportunity employer. Our agency is one of five Montana statewide government offices headed by an elected official (the other four being Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Superintendent of Public Instruction). Troy Downing is the current Commissioner and also serves on Montana's State Land Board.
